North Devon Arts was formed in 1998 from a need expressed by rurally isolated artists in the area, of wanting to feel connected, meet like-minded people and feeling they could be a greater voice for the Arts in North Devon by joining forces.

Opened in august 2008, art’s complex is a self-funding charitable organisation based in Saint Margaret’s House, 151 London Road, Edinburgh. Our main aim is to try to redress part of the imbalance in the working artist/affordable space ratio that exists in the city.
Our mid to long term objective is to reach out specifically to the surrounding community through arts education and participatory projects. We hope to enhance this aim by inviting culturally diverse projects and artists to show/discuss their work in art’s complex.
We have approximately 70 000 sq ft of useable space. On completion of phase one of the art’s complex project, we will accommodate 120 individual studio spaces, 11 000 square feet gallery/event space and an equivalent 11 000 square feet of available community education/art therapy space.
We are soon to open a printmaking workshop with dark room and a theatre school.

From October 2004 the ArcArt gallery, which is attached to sculptor Mike Roles studio, has hosted a programme of both solo and mixed exhibitions. It is it's ArcArt's intention to act as a focal point from where artists who share a particular interest, especially in psychological and existential issues, can promote and exhibit their work from a central London venue.
Though I have always had a flair for pencil and chalk drawing, I began oil painting at the age of 12, studied hard, developed a talent and practiced in every spare moment, enjoying early regional competition success and media publicity for my work in the North of England. Fortunately, my tutors recognized my skill and encouraged me to undertake both my Ordinary and Advanced level art exams a few years earlier than my peers, which I passed with the top grades. Being financially driven at that time, in 1983 I graduated in engineering and with a passion to travel, I initially pursued a career as a design consultant with various International design consulting companies, residing primarily in the Middle East. Nevertheless, an artisan at heart, I returned to Commercial Art several years ago as a semi professional freelance artist, and have extensively developed artistry and my own personal style through exhaustive self tuition and 'burning' the midnight oil. I actively display my artwork in my website, galleries, magazine publications, shows and exhibitions and have recently been elected a Fellow of the Royal Society for Arts.
My work is constantly evolving in response to the geographical areas in which I have worked; the local materials available to me; and the varying artistic techniques that I have employed. From an initial focus on sculpture, my interests have broadened to include land art, painting, drawing and photography. Recently, my principal inspiration has been the exploration of the linked sectors of security and protection, both of which are strongly represented in the natural and man-made world.
My starting point is normally the creation of a powerful central core for each work of art. This element both focuses the viewer’s attention and creates a marked contrast between the central area and the more muted themes on the work’s periphery. In sculpture, this concept involves the use of focal, nest-like forms sited within low-key, complementary backgrounds. For paintings, in the core area there are idyllic towns, islands or worlds encased in solid organic matter.
My works of art have always generated a strong, positive reaction because of the combination of their strong structure; their vibrant colours, and the thought-provoking mental processes that are generated. These qualities have ensured that my works are widely sought after for display in a wide variety of locations.

I enjoy travelling and photography. The subject matter of my paintings is often from those travels.
Although I trained as an illustrator/caricaturist, which is predominantly a drawing skill, chemotherapy left me with neuropathy in my hands which made drawing painful so I turned to painting which is easier on the hands.I have had some success since 2004 selling through exhibitions, art auctions, galleries and private commissions.
I work first hand from direct observation or from photographs taken by myself, which connects me with the subject and acts as an aide memoire. Subjects include beach scenes, beach huts, landscapes and flower paintings. Watercolour or acrylics are my preferred media. Colour, composition and texture are important elements.
I have been exploring the North Devon coast for the last three years. My study is of the hidden coast found only through a vertiginous climb down a cliff path or by leaving the sandy beach and trekking over seaweed strewn boulders at low tide. This is a wild coast, unpopulated by holiday-makers, the domain of seagulls that can make you feel quite unwelcome. It is also an historic coast where millions of years can be seen in the layers of strata of an eroded cliff face and the more recent past can be found in smooth rusting ship parts, in memorial of hundreds of wrecks, littering the rocky shore.
These photographs are made possible through the technology of digital imaging. I have embraced this new medium and challenged it to assist with the documenting of what is seen at the back, top, sides and floor of a cave through combination of exposure, focus and stitching of more than 50 images.
We display work by local artists and craftspeople, as well as hosting a variety of workshops and networking events.
