Lizanne's picture

My work is intended to be "images to delight the eye and provoke thought", and includes a variety of media including book art, collage, paint, textiles and printmaking. The images are sometimes representational sometimes abstracted, and emphasize line, form and colour. After a history degree from Oxford, a PGCE from Warwick University and a City and Guilds qualification in textiles I gained a degree in Art and Design from the University of Hertfordshire. I have had a variety of solo and group exhibitions in England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland, and also work to commission, and run workshops in making pop-ups and books.

I paint portraits and murals taking great pride in my attention to detail in order to truly capture the character of the subject and, for my animals, also the amazing textures. In both, I create lively images with exceptional depth and likeness.

I am inspired by texture and colour – the shadows cast in a face, the movement of fur, or the beautiful patterns in our environment, often using paint finish techniques in my work.

I enjoy working closely with clients to find the perfect format for the subject or subjects - a pencil sketch or a painting, a head and shoulders' image or a depiction of a favourite family photo. In my murals, I use my design background to create original pieces of work.

Photographic prints and canvases encompassing landscape, still life and abstract. Prints are made on Hahnemuhle photo rag paper with pigment inks for archival permanence. Canvases are stretched on wooden frames and lacquered. Darkroom and historic process printing can be carried out also.

My work is a fusion of science and mysticism.

I am London-based artist working mainly in oils and directly influenced by my environment; from the Pacific light of my childhood in New Zealand to my current location on Eel Pie Island. The island is surrounded by trees and the daily tidal fluctuations energise this historic location, but it is a poem by Robert Graves about a mystical forest which inspired the 'Forest Series'.

Throughout my career I have placed myself in a series of unusual locations in order to stimulate my imagination, these have included a Space Research Lab. a Victorian church in London, an ancient Dominican Priory in Kent, empty shops, a canal house on a Thames-side dock yard and most recently the National Physical Laboratory in London, where I responded to the images scientific research by using photography and mixed media.

The website shows figurative sculptures, mostly in wood, ranging from semi-abstract nudes to interpretations of bible scenes.
Also there are pages which give some insight into the processes and tools used. Sculpting in wood is very different from sculpting in clay or plaster, but I feel the end results are worth the extra effort. Nicely finished wood just begs you to touch it, and the grain patterns can add a whole new dimension to the form.
Even if you're not interested buying original artworks, I hope you will find something of interest in the galleries.

THE ART OF VAN RENSELAR - ILLUSTRATIONS TO UNKNOWN STORIES

Van Renselar is primarily concerned with illustrating his own unique view of life using composition, colour and an ever-evolving form of symbolism to create intriguing and strikingly different art. He takes ideas from experiences which are visual, cerebral and emotional in nature.
As he says, "I want to use my knowledge of colour, image and line to make pictures which involve and intrigue the viewer. I take ideas from around and within me, using intuition and imagination to create a new context. Much of my work stems from my subconscious, where I see actions, events and ideas as particular images and colours. As some music can take on a different meaning after it has left the composer's pen, I encourage the viewer to create their own story about the meaning of the picture.”

An American artist living in France since 1974, his work is exhibited in the USA, England, Switzerland and France. Galleries and numerous exhibitions include: Centre Georges Pompidou, FIAC, Figuration Critique . His intensely realist paintings explore the contrasts of nature and civilisation.
Director of the Atelier Neo Medici in Monflanquin and Villeneuve sur Lot in the South of France.
He has been teaching painting and drawing since 1996.
The paintings and drawings in this body of work are representations of "emotional moments;" explorations of the human condition. Both spiritual and introspective in purpose, I am interested in conveying the dynamics of relationships and the aloneness one must confront and accept in this world. It is with the embracing of that idea that brings us to the understanding of our oneness, our singular humanity and allows us to feel at peace to explore and express our loves, fears, wants, needs and hope.

These paintings possess a focus that reflects a rigorous training. What one perceives as polish is essentially obsessive preoccupation with allowing the image its own life.

My painting is a direct response to the world around me. I work in oils which I love for their painterly qualities. I am interested in the composition of the image in relation to the edges of the support; a strong underlying two-dimensional design, and a fascination with light, colour and mood.

I paint a variety of subject matter always from the subject: the figure, landscape, and still life. Some larger work is painted in my studio at home from drawings and paintings. I work in sketchbooks where ever I go and put a great deal of emphasis on drawing believing that it underpins all good painting. Life Drawing is a regular part of my practice.

I have access to an artist's studio on the Suffolk coast where the ever changing sea and sky dominates. It’s a wonderful vantage point for observing people walking or sitting on the beach and the sea wall, either in conversation or quiet reflection.

The last five summers were spent in Italy painting people and the landscape, and studying the art and architecture of that beautiful country. Previous to that I have travelled widely throughout France and Spain both painting and studying Western Art.

I have loved working with glass over the last five years, designing and making fused glass bowls, window and wall hangings, mirrors, jewellery and other glassware. Each piece is completely unique.
Ancient symbols occurring in nature such as spirals, labyrinths, and rainbows inspire my designs, plus a passion for colour and light. I often use dichroic glass to add a sparkle to the pieces.
A former performance artist, I have been told that my work is quite theatrical in the way I combine vibrant colours within the space of each piece.
I am always happy to take commissions, recently I have designed and made a set of kitchen tiles, a mural for a narrow-boat, and some bespoke bridal jewellery. I am currently making some windows for a barn conversion.
