Brief Description
Situated in the heart of Mayfair, London, Halcyon Gallery is one of the foremost contemporary galleries in the world, specialising in original works of art and rare graphics from the finest contemporary artists and modern masters.
Profile

President of Halcyon Gallery, Paul Green, originally founded the gallery in Birmingham in 1982. Out of that gallery has grown a multi-faceted organisation, the Halcyon Group, which includes Halcyon Gallery and the award-winning fine art publisher Washington Green.

Paul Green’s original concentration on the human element of art – working with outstanding artists and equally extraordinary clients from all walks of life – still holds true today. Halcyon Gallery makes a longterm investment in the artists it works with, developing them and giving them a platform and the freedom to be creative. The gallery works closely with a number of artists, from Spanish painter Ibanez, whose work invites comparison with Zuburan and Velazquez, to the late great eccentric Rober t Lenkeiwicz. The sculptor Lorenzo Quinn, whose exhibition launched the new gallery at 24 Bruton Street has been working with Halcyon Galler y for over ten years. Halcyon Gallery plays a pivotal role in developing and placing public art, including a number of major commissions in cities around the world. In 2005, the gallery donated Lorenzo Quinn’s sculpture, The Tree of Life, to the City of Birmingham, in memory of those citizens who lost their lives during the blitz on Birmingham in the Second World War. Halcyon Gallery is also involved in a number of projects further a field including the installation of the monumental 9 metre Rise Through Education by Lorenzo Quinn at ASPIRE, Academy for Sports Excellence in Doha, Qatar.

Events

Bob Dylan on Canvas
13 Feb 2010 - 10 Apr 2010 | 24 Bruton Street, London
Halcyon Gallery presents an exclusive exhibition of Bob Dylan’s first paintings on canvas, based on drawings and sketches made while on the road during the period of 1989 - 1992. These paintings are the grand finale of The Drawn Blank Series and testament to his artistic progression: from drawings to works on paper and now finally to canvas. This exhibition provides a unique opportunity to see the first original masterpieces of a creative legend.

"I just draw what’s interesting to me, and then I paint it. Rows of houses, orchard acres, lines of tree trunks, could be anything. I can take a bowl of fruit and turn it into a life and death drama. Women are power figures, so I depict them that way. I can find people to paint in mobile home communities. I could paint bourgeois people too.

I’m not trying to make social comment or fulfil somebody’s vision and I can find subject matter anywhere. I guess in some way that comes out of the folk world that I came up in." Bob Dylan

Bob Dylan on Canvas will be the last UK exhibition of this series, foreshadowing his upcoming exhibition at the prestigious Statens Museum for Kunst in Copenhagen in which he will unveil new works alongside selected pieces from The Drawn Blank Series, curated by Dr. Kasper Monrad.
